What does the word “vessel” mean to you?
Vessel is a beautiful word, and it immediately evokes imagery and biblical concepts that I hold dear. Upon hearing the word vessel I immediately retreat to the Scripture in 2 Corinthians 4:7.
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.”
I could possibly write a book on this scripture alone in relation to the Christian faith and my personal experiences with its truth. Vessel… In the practical use of the word we all understand a vessel is a means to contain something for a specific purpose. A vase is a vessel for flowers, a cup is a vessel for beverages, but what is the human body a vessel for? If every vessel has a purpose and a specific reason for existence, what was this body I occupy created for? Every vessel has the ability to be used for different purposes, for instance a cup can be a great paper weight for a constant breeze that runs across your desk. A vase can be used to catch water dripping from you ceiling in a storm. Although these vessels can be used for different purposes, in perspective they have a specific objective for their creation. With that being said, who else would better know the preeminent purpose of that object than its architect? So, who is your architect? God is the architect of all life and all that pertains to it, yet this truth is not universal.
Unfortunately, there are many who believe they have evolved from nothing into something…? If you were created from nothing why even entertain thoughts of purpose, or attempt to have a life? (That’s another topic though.) A vessel is a creation that aids, enhances, and fulfills a part of a person’s life. Men needed a way to better contain liquid apart from scooping it into their hand at the lake, thus cups were created.
. God longed to have a creation in His likeness and image to fellowship with Him, thus man was created! Now that we have a premise and a pretty good visual let me further expound. Just stay with me, this sounds elementary but its in preparation to drive my point home; eventually…I think
.
The cup, the bottle, and so forth was an invention that efficiently transported and contained what is vital to our survival and enjoyment, right? In one container you can have water; a necessary liquid for survival, or a milkshake…pure enjoyment.
. We can live without a milkshake but not without water, we are like Gods personal container, now listen closely. God is all sufficient but yet He places a need in himself for mankind and we are created with a need for Him. God orchestrated a plan to hope in us as the only creation made in His image and likeness. He fashioned our body in His likeness, and reached within Himself to implant His very spirit in us.
There is no way to avoid being like God entirely, even if a child at the peak of rebellion disowns a parent they still contain that parents DNA. In essence the main purpose for the creation of this vessel we label the human body; is to FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD, period! If you have been taught otherwise you may need to realign your motivation for serving God. Although this body serves millions of purposes and tasks it was created by God and for God. Think of yourself having a tag, or a marker on your body “MADE BY GOD”. Just like everything we practically own is “MADE IN CHINA”.
. Accepting this truth of being God made is the prerequisite to truly living and knowing your purpose on earth. Creation speaks of fellowship with God, Heaven speaks of fellowship with God; beginning and end, everything in between is for this purpose alone.
As a vessel for God our main purpose it to fellowship with God and as God’s vessel we become containers of His person. Meaning we not only resemble His character traits we become a representation of who He is in this world. Just as if you place an open container in the rain the container would fill with rain, God’s spirit fills us as a result of being in His presence. The same love, joy, and peace we encounter and are filled with in Gods presence we are expected to pour onto others for the purpose of drawing them to that same source; God. Our lives as a Christian should scream God, and cause those around us to say, “Whatever you’re on or you’re filled with I want it!” The scripture that was quoted above actually confirm what I am saying here. God describes through Paul the treasure that fills us so surpasses the frailty of our temporal bodies. Men will know inevitably that we could not accomplish what we do in our own strength. Our lives should be filled with the miraculous as a testament to those around us, were evidently different. Paul goes on to say
“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.”
The pressures of life that cause many to crumble should not be frowned upon by the Christian; they should be invited, why? Trials, tribulations, perplexities, and despair actually bring out the best that is in us for others to see. Think of it like this… as a superhero in the middle of a busy city in regular attire a building randomly begins to tip over. Having to act immediately the hero uses his ability to keep the building from falling thus revealing to those around him. This dude is obviously not human. As the Christian our trials cause us to smile in the midst of the worst of tragedies revealing something different inside of us to others. Paul had many stories like this, bitten by a venomous snake in a foreign land in front of the natives he shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no harm. According to what the normal vessel does he should have swelled up, began to hallucinate and dropped down dead. The natives waited for some sign and symptoms but they never came, he was fine, thus they thought he was a god. That is when Paul did what we all must do and show them, “It’s not me- it’s Him!” That is why we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to point men to the glory of God and fellowship with Him.
We’re to be like an aluminum can that seem to be pressed and crushed, nearly destroyed. But somehow further proving how indestructible it truly is through the pressure it is confronted with. No matter what it cannot be broken, this confounds and causes the natural mind to think, “That can has to be made of something greater, something indestructible?” Then we get the chance to showcase our God, and say, “I’m not indestructible, I’m made just like you, but what’s inside of me is what matter most and you can have it too, meet my friend Jesus.” In conclusion we are all vessels for something or someone; we all have philosophies, beliefs, convictions because we all exist. What we hold as truth we carry in this vessel of the human body and pour into others inevitably on a regular basis. Every vessel will spill out onto the lives of others and bring an influence, whether it be good, bad, temporal, or eternal. But we choose what occupies our vessel. So what’s contained in your vessel?
